indianapolisAbout the University of Indianapolis

The University of Indianapolis is an independent institution of 5,000 students, located minutes from the heart of Indiana’s capital city. UIndy is distinguished by respected undergraduate programs in education, communication and the health sciences, nationally ranked graduate programs, and centers focused on education reform and aging studies.

Teacher Preparation at UIndy

UIndy’s Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellows choose a focus in math, chemistry, physics, or life sciences, taking courses together in cohorts. Key themes include equity and diversity; adolescent identity, culture, and education; educational theories and urban classroom practice; and science and math pedagogy. The curriculum is presented in an engaging Project-Based Learning format, which the Fellows later will incorporate into their own classroom teaching.

From day one, the program provides an immersive clinical experience, with Fellows observing and working in urban schools three to five days per week. Once the Fellows begin their new careers, they continue to receive intensive one-on-one mentoring for their first three years of teaching. More information

Schools/Districts Working With University of Indianapolisindy-campus

To provide clinical experience, UIndy partners with three Marion County school districts: centrally located Indianapolis Public Schools (enrollment 35,300), the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township to the west (14,745 students), and the Metropolitan School District of Decatur Township to the southwest (6,100 students). These districts have a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches, and all have redesigned high schools to engage students in learning in a caring environment. Additionally, UIndy partners with Perry Township Schools and Herron High School.

The UIndy program maintains job placement partnerships with high schools in Fort Wayne, Gary, and South Bend, as well as partners regularly with the Metropolitan School Districts of Warren Township and Lawrence Township for student teaching placements.
