WW President Levine in NY Daily News on Donald Trump vs. William Jennings Bryan

Woodrow Wilson President Arthur Levine takes a look back at history for an understanding of the recent presidential election. In a recent New York Daily News opinion piece, Dr. Levine draws parallels between William Jennings Bryan’s 1896 run for office and that in 2016 of President-elect Donald J. Trump.  Each election saw a candidate run on the promise of returning America to a perceived greatness of the past—Bryan seeking to restore an agrarian economy and Trump similarly pledging to revitalize an industrial economy. But, Dr. Levine cautions,

The problem is that, no matter how much we may want it, it’s impossible to restore the past. That only happens in movies and novels, and at Disneyland. This country’s transition from a national, analog, industrial society to a global, digital information economy is well under way and unstoppable.
