Holding institutions of higher education to higher standards: Arthur Levine on HEA reauthorization
Higher education has been dramatically transformed in recent years with the rise of MOOCs, competency-based education, blended learning, overseas campuses, the for-profit sector, and many other shifts. Such changes make it all the more urgent that the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act require strong accountability measures.
That’s Arthur Levine’s contention in a new statement on HEA. “Education has been slow to embrace the necessary changes in thinking, behavior, and expectation,” he writes. Levine endorses better data collection, new approaches to accreditation, and more accountability. “Maintaining the status quo in higher education,” he says, “is insufficient and unwise.”
